What Is a VPS, and Why Traders Use One for Automated Trading

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a remote computer, hosted in a data center and accessible over the internet, that runs continuously and independently of your own computer. For trading purposes, a VPS is typically used to run a trading platform (like MT4 or MT5) and any Expert Advisors attached to it around the clock, without depending on a personal computer staying powered on and connected.

The core problem a VPS solves is straightforward: an automated trading strategy running on a home computer stops working the moment that computer is turned off, loses internet connection, restarts for a software update, or simply goes to sleep — any of which can mean a trade that should have been managed (a stop-loss adjusted, a position closed) simply isn't, at potentially significant cost. A VPS, hosted in a professional data center with reliable power and internet, removes this dependency, keeping an automated strategy running continuously.

Beyond reliability, a VPS located physically close to a broker's trading servers can also reduce latency — the time it takes for an order to travel from the platform to the broker's execution servers — which matters more for very short-term, execution-sensitive strategies like scalping than for longer-term swing or position trading, where a few milliseconds of latency has little practical effect.

A VPS is generally only necessary for traders running automated strategies (EAs) that need to operate continuously, or manual traders who specifically want their trading platform always available regardless of their own computer or internet status — a discretionary trader who checks and manages positions manually a few times a day, without automation, typically doesn't need one. Several brokers offer a free or discounted VPS to clients meeting a minimum trading volume or account balance, which is worth checking before paying for a separate third-party VPS service.
