ICT Concepts Part 1: Market Structure Shifts (BOS, CHOCH, and Displacement)

Break of Structure, or BOS, describes price making a new swing high in an uptrend or a new swing low in a downtrend, confirming that the existing trend, as defined by the market structure concepts covered earlier in this module, is still intact. When price breaks the most recent relevant swing point in the direction of the prevailing trend, traders read that as continuation confirmation rather than a warning sign.

Change of Character, or CHOCH, is the opposite signal and marks the first structural clue that a trend may be reversing. It occurs when price breaks a swing point in the direction opposite to the current trend, for example breaking below a prior higher low during an uptrend. A CHOCH does not confirm a new trend has started, but it tells traders that the character of price action has shifted enough to demand caution and closer attention to the next few swings.

Displacement refers to a strong, fast, often large-bodied move away from a price zone, usually leaving behind clear imbalance in the form of the fair value gaps discussed earlier in this module. Traders view displacement as a signature of institutional participation, since retail-driven moves tend to be slower and choppier, while displacement candles show aggressive, one-sided buying or selling pushing price sharply in one direction. Displacement often accompanies both a BOS and a CHOCH, since real structural shifts are usually driven by forceful, not gradual, price movement.

Together these three ideas give traders a language for describing what is happening structurally in real time: BOS confirms trend continuation, CHOCH flags a potential reversal, and displacement tells you whether the move behind either signal had the aggressive, imbalanced character associated with institutional order flow rather than random drift.
