Building a Demo Trading Plan

Demo trading gets a bad reputation because most people use it aimlessly, clicking around a simulated account with no real plan, and then wonder why it didn't prepare them for live trading. A demo period only becomes useful when it's structured like a real test, with a defined length, a defined number of trades, and defined criteria for what counts as success before any real money gets involved.

A workable demo plan sets concrete boundaries in advance: for example, a minimum of six to eight weeks, or a minimum of thirty completed trades, whichever comes later, trading the exact entry, exit, and management rules from your written strategy. Every trade gets logged in the same journal format you intend to use live, including the reasoning, the checklist confirmation, and the outcome, so the demo period produces real data rather than a vague impression of "it felt fine."

Success criteria should be defined before the demo period starts, not decided afterward based on how the results happen to look. Reasonable criteria include following the pre-trade checklist on essentially every trade with no exceptions, keeping position sizing consistent with the plan on every trade, staying within a defined maximum drawdown, and producing positive expectancy across the sample. If any of these fail, the honest conclusion is that either the strategy or your execution of it isn't ready yet.

It's worth being honest about demo trading's limits too. Demo accounts remove real financial fear, so a trader can follow rules perfectly in demo and still panic on the first real losing trade with money on the line. Demo trading validates the strategy and the mechanics of following rules, but many traders still benefit from a short period of very small live trades afterward to confirm the psychology holds up as well as the statistics do.
